Asia America Fiber Optic Cable Route Survey
Service: Environmental Assessments
In support of the installation of a new fiber-optic telecommunication cable linking Southeast Asia and the US, AMS scientists conducted an ROV based reconnaissance and characterization survey of the seafloor habitats and associated marine biota along a 14km segment of the proposed cable route for AT&T. The surveyed route contained low- and high-relief hard bottom, coarse sand, cobble, mixed sand and rock, and fine silt-sand habitat with corresponding different marine communities. The overall survey approach and scientific protocols were designed to enable data comparison with similar surveys conducted in the area ten years previously. Final study results were provided to the California State Lands Commission and California Coastal Commission and used in preparation of CEQA documentation for the project.
