Supporting San Francisco Infrastructure Upgrades

March 29, 2017

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is in the early stages of a 20-year, multi-billion dollar capital improvement program intended to upgrade its wastewater infrastructure. The Sewer System Improvement Project (SSIP) includes investigation of projects with potential to improve the water quality of San Francisco Bay by altering the frequency, location, and duration of wet weather discharges from the City’s combined sewer system.

AMS is supporting many facets of this effort through oversight of the water quality monitoring efforts. To-date, these efforts have included assistance with monitoring program development, wet season and dry season deployments of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers to measure currents near discharge points, and implementation of the water quality monitoring for combined sewer discharge events at four locations spread along the City’s shoreline. All results are being used to develop and calibrate a receiving water model that will inform infrastructure improvements.
